Shepherd Hut Design, a Collaboration with Graig Glamping.

Discover how we approach shepherd hut design, collaborating on bespoke small-scale retreats that balance practicality, character and thoughtful architectural detailing within the North Wales landscape.

Through our ongoing collaboration with a shepherd hut manufacturer, we design bespoke units tailored to each client’s specific needs and location. Every hut is thoughtfully crafted to balance comfort, functionality, and style, with layouts ranging from compact, minimalist spaces to fully equipped retreats.

Each detail, from fitted furniture to finishes, is entirely bespoke, ensuring the design reflects the client’s vision while perfectly fitting the space. Working closely with the manufacturer from concept to completion, we design custom shepherd huts that blend seamlessly into their natural surroundings, creating unique retreats designed to inspire and delight.

  • Through our work with Graig Glamping, we have helped design a range of bespoke, small-scale retreats created for clients across North and Mid Wales. Our role focuses on spatial planning, interior layout and visual detailing, ensuring each hut feels considered, balanced and suited to its intended use while maintaining a clear architectural identity.

Every unit responds to a different brief — from compact holiday lets to private retreats and home-working spaces — and the design process begins with understanding how the space will be used day to day. Layouts vary significantly, incorporating kitchens, bathrooms and integrated furniture within tight footprints while maintaining a sense of openness and calm. Careful attention is given to circulation, proportions and natural light, allowing even the smallest spaces to feel comfortable and intuitive rather than constrained.

The collaboration works seamlessly, combining fabrication expertise with architectural input. Graig Glamping lead the construction process while we provide spatial design, visual direction and client coordination, helping to shape huts that are both technically robust and visually refined. Many projects are situated within rural or agricultural landscapes, where material choices and subtle detailing ensure each structure complements its surroundings rather than competing with them.

A key part of our design approach is maximising usability within smaller floor areas — typically around 18m² — ensuring that storage, sleeping areas and living spaces work cohesively without feeling overdesigned. Mezzanine beds, panoramic windows and adaptable furniture are often introduced to enhance flexibility and improve the overall experience of the space, while warm timber finishes and carefully selected fixtures create a sense of comfort and longevity.

No two huts are the same, which is what makes the collaboration so rewarding. Some prioritise expansive glazing and elevated finishes to frame views across the landscape, while others focus on simplicity and durability for off-grid living. Across every project, the shared goal is to create something distinctive, purposeful and quietly integrated into its setting.

This ongoing work reflects a wider belief that smaller spaces 'when designed thoughtfully' can deliver the same architectural quality and character as larger schemes. By balancing creativity with practical problem-solving, we help create places that serve a clear purpose, spark curiosity and provide meaningful connections to the landscape around them.
