Garage Conversion & Interior Design - Ruthin, Denbighshire.

A modern garage conversion and interior design project in Denbighshire, transforming an integral garage into a vibrant family space while improving flow, light and everyday usability.

This project explores how thoughtful internal reconfiguration can reshape the way a home is used without increasing its external footprint. Located in Ruthin, Denbighshire, the property was originally purchased off-plan with a traditional layout that limited flexibility on the ground floor. Rather than extending outward, the design focused on rethinking internal space — transforming an underused part of the house into a playful and practical family room while enhancing the connection between kitchen, dining and living areas.

The interior design approach balanced practicality with warmth, introducing bespoke joinery, calm tonal finishes and subtle architectural interventions that allow the home to feel cohesive and adaptable. The result is a modern family environment that feels light, functional and quietly refined.

  • "We couldn’t be happier with the transformation of our home! The bespoke designs, including the stunning mural and hexagon wall panels, added a personal touch. The new layout improved functionality and flow, while the decking is perfect for the summer months. A truly thoughtful and professional service—highly recommended!"

  • Set within a contemporary residential development in Denbighshire, this project focused on unlocking the hidden potential of an integral garage while reimagining the wider interior layout. The design approach centred on improving spatial flow and creating a more connected living environment, allowing the ground floor to function as a flexible family space without altering the external form of the house. By working within the existing footprint, the project demonstrates how thoughtful interior architecture and careful internal reconfiguration can deliver meaningful transformation without the need for larger structural expansion.

The redesign introduced a dedicated playroom shaped around creativity and adaptability, incorporating bespoke storage solutions and a hand-painted mural inspired by the surrounding North Wales landscape. Removing sections of internal wall between the kitchen and dining areas allowed natural light to travel more freely through the home, strengthening visual connections while maintaining a sense of separation between spaces. A timber slat screen adds warmth and texture while subtly defining zones within the open-plan layout, creating moments of privacy without interrupting the overall sense of openness.

Interior detailing played a key role in shaping the atmosphere of the project. Soft neutral finishes, layered lighting and carefully selected materials create a calm backdrop suited to modern family living, balancing practicality with a refined aesthetic. The living room features a bespoke hexagonal wall installation that introduces depth and character while reflecting the clients’ personality. The newly created playroom provides a vibrant yet practical environment tailored to everyday use, ensuring the space can evolve alongside the family’s changing needs.

Externally, the introduction of bi-fold doors opening onto a composite deck extends the interior outward, strengthening the relationship between indoor and outdoor living. This subtle intervention enhances natural light levels and creates a seamless transition between the home and garden, encouraging flexible use of space throughout the seasons. Material choices were guided by durability and simplicity, ensuring the design remains timeless and easy to maintain while supporting the rhythms of daily life.

Working within the constraints of a new-build structure required a careful and measured design response. Rather than relying on dramatic gestures, the project focuses on small but meaningful architectural moves that collectively transform the experience of the home. The overall scheme reflects Winter Jones’ approach to residential design — understated, practical and rooted in how spaces are genuinely used — showing how a well-executed internal remodel and thoughtful interior design strategy can elevate a standard house into a personalised, functional family environment.
