These lodges redefine rural accommodation, offering a contemporary and carefully considered alternative in the Vale of Clwyd. Inspired by Scandinavian principles, the architecture features large gable-end glazing that frames panoramic views across the surrounding landscape, often drawing attention to local wildlife and seasonal changes.
The interiors are designed around open-plan, double-height spaces that balance refined finishes with comfort and practicality. Every detail, from material selection to spatial flow, has been carefully resolved to create a calm and distinctive retreat that sits comfortably within the natural character of North Wales.

This project centred on the design and development of four Scandinavian-inspired lodges set within the Vale of Clwyd. Rather than treating the buildings as standalone cabins, the approach considered how architecture, setting and guest experience could work together to form a cohesive and distinctive destination. Early design stages explored massing, orientation and glazing strategy to ensure each unit felt connected to the surrounding landscape while maintaining privacy and shelter from prevailing weather.
The external appearance adopts a calm, contemporary aesthetic influenced by Nordic precedents, using natural timber finishes and clean roof forms that sit comfortably within the rural context. Large gable-end glazing frames expansive views while allowing natural light to define the internal atmosphere throughout the day. The intention was to create accommodation that feels both modern and rooted in place, avoiding pastiche while embracing the honesty of simple materials.
Internally, the layout was developed to maximise flexibility within a compact footprint. Open-plan living spaces form the heart of each lodge, combining kitchen, dining and lounge areas beneath double-height volumes that enhance the sense of scale. A mezzanine bedroom introduces a layered spatial experience, allowing guests to engage with the landscape from multiple vantage points while maintaining a strong connection to the central living area below.
Material selection played a significant role in shaping the identity of the project. Renewable solid timber construction reflects a commitment to sustainability while also providing warmth and tactility to the interior. Carefully positioned openings encourage natural ventilation during warmer months, supported by efficient heating solutions designed to provide comfort throughout the year without compromising energy performance.
Externally, each lodge extends into the landscape through private decks that encourage outdoor living and quiet retreat. Landscaping was intentionally restrained, allowing the architecture to sit gently within the fields rather than dominate them. This measured approach reinforces the wider ambition of the project — to create contemporary accommodation that respects its setting while offering a distinctive and memorable experience for visitors.
The completed development demonstrates how thoughtful rural architecture can elevate small-scale leisure projects beyond standard holiday accommodation. By combining clarity of form, durable materials and a strong relationship with the surrounding environment, the lodges provide a refined example of contemporary design that balances commercial viability with architectural integrity.
