Solar System Mural: Inspiring Space Exploration

Discover how we created a captivating solar system mural, transforming a child’s love for space into an inspiring and educational feature.

This custom wall mural brought the solar system to life, turning a first-floor landing into an educational and visually stunning feature for a young space enthusiast. Designed to scale, the mural stretches across the landing, with each planet accurately sized and positioned between doorways, orbiting a central light fixture representing the sun.

The mural transitions from light blue on the ground floor to deep purple on the first, evoking the depth and wonder of space. Planets were printed on matte adhesive vinyl with hand-applied labels, while orbit lines and stars were meticulously hand-painted. The result is a striking mural that’s both educational and a constant talking point for visitors.

  • "We absolutely love the solar system mural! It’s beautifully detailed, educational, and completely unique. Our child is thrilled and can now name all the planets. The design fits perfectly and has become a standout feature in our home. The attention to detail and care taken were exceptional—thank you for an amazing project!"

  • This mural project was a true joy to work on — the kind of commission that perfectly blends creativity, craftsmanship, and a touch of childhood wonder. Commissioned for a space-obsessed five-year-old, the brief was to design and paint a bespoke solar system mural that would stretch across the landing wall and wrap down the stairwell, creating a feature that felt both fun and educational, while remaining beautifully integrated with the home.

From our first conversation with the client, it was clear this was going to be a collaborative and rewarding process. They had a strong idea of what they wanted to achieve — a mural that would reflect their child’s love of space in a way that felt designed, not themed, and that could grow with him over time. The concept needed to strike a careful balance: playful and engaging, but not overly cartoonish or temporary.

We began by mapping out the wall layout and preparing scaled visuals that showed how the planets, orbit lines, and space-themed elements could wrap around the architecture of the landing and stair. Each planet was positioned in the correct order from the sun, and — importantly — was sized proportionally in relation to the others. This added a subtle educational layer to the mural, reinforcing the child’s understanding of scale and distance within the solar system.

To define zones and add depth, we created a tonal transition across the stairwell walls — starting with light blue at the base and shifting into deep space blues and purples above. Rather than using multiple tins of bespoke paint colours, we kept material costs low by mixing base paints in controlled percentage proportions. This created a smooth gradient without unnecessary waste or expense, and allowed for a surprisingly immersive visual effect on a modest budget.

Each planet was printed onto matte-finish adhesive vinyl and carefully applied by hand. Labels were added using individual vinyl letters, and orbit lines were drawn freehand using white paint pens, giving the mural a crafted, spontaneous quality that felt just right for the space.

What we loved most was the engagement from the child throughout the project. He helped choose colours, memorised facts, and proudly recited every planet in order once it was complete. It was a reminder that thoughtful design can inspire curiosity long after the paint dries.

This was a project filled with personality, imagination, and heart — and with careful planning and resourceful thinking, it was also impressively cost-effective.
