Brîg Barbers: Sensitive Design for a Listed Building
A complete transformation, delivering listed building refurbishment, interior design, branding, website build and booking integration within Denbigh’s town centre.
From concept to launch, the project combined architectural input, conservation coordination and operational planning with a refined interior scheme. Brand identity, signage and retail display strategy were developed alongside a responsive website, ensuring tone, materials and customer journey aligned across every touchpoint.
Working within a Grade II* listed frontage, proposals were shaped around repair, reversibility and appropriate detailing. Shopfront restoration, lighting, joinery and finishes were coordinated with planning and listed building consent, while allowing the space to feel contemporary and welcoming.
Visualisations supported the wider process by testing ideas early and presenting options clearly to the client and conservation team. They reduced uncertainty, helped confirm decisions, and ensured the delivered space matched the agreed design intent.

"From the early stages through to completion, Rob helped me make clear and confident decisions about the design. The visualisations were invaluable — they allowed me to properly understand how the space would look and feel, especially given the constraints of a listed building. Rob was thoughtful, thorough, and always clear in his communication, which made the process feel considered and straightforward."

This project involved the sensitive transformation of a long-vacant ground-floor commercial unit within a Grade II* listed building on Denbigh High Street into a distinctive, contemporary barber shop. Located at the heart of Denbigh’s historic town centre, the building forms part of a highly significant listed frontage, requiring a careful, heritage-led approach that balanced conservation principles with the practical needs of a modern commercial business.
Winter Jones provided a full end-to-end service, supporting the client from early concept through to completion and launch. Our role encompassed architectural design, listed building and planning support, interior design, branding, website design, booking system integration and product labelling, ensuring a cohesive and well-considered outcome across both physical and digital environments.
Architecturally, the project focused on the restoration and reuse of a Grade II* listed shop unit, bringing a deteriorated and underused space back into active use. A light-touch, conservation-led strategy guided all works, prioritising repair over replacement and ensuring that interventions were modest, reversible and respectful of the building’s historic fabric. Particular emphasis was placed on the reinstatement and enhancement of the traditional shopfront, strengthening the unit’s contribution to the wider historic streetscape and reinforcing its presence on the High Street.
Internally, the existing commercial space — identified as being of low heritage significance — was reconfigured to create a calm, functional and welcoming barber shop. The layout was carefully designed to maximise visibility from the street, maintain an active frontage and provide a clear customer journey from arrival to service. Bespoke joinery, considered lighting and a restrained palette of materials were used to create a contemporary interior that sits comfortably within a historic listed building setting, avoiding pastiche while allowing the architecture to breathe.
Alongside the architectural and interior works, Winter Jones developed the Brig Barbers brand identity, establishing a clear visual language that could be applied consistently across signage, interiors, print and digital platforms. This extended to product labelling and in-store retail presentation, ensuring that grooming products aligned seamlessly with the overall brand and interior design.
Digitally, we designed and delivered the Brig Barbers website, creating a clear, intuitive platform that reflects the character of the space and supports the day-to-day operation of the business. A key element of this was the integration of an online booking system, allowing customers to book appointments easily while ensuring the system felt fully embedded within the website rather than a disconnected third-party tool.
The completed project demonstrates how listed building refurbishment, commercial interior design and brand development can work together as a unified process. Brig Barbers is not only a carefully crafted physical space within a historic building, but a fully realised commercial and digital identity — supporting a local independent business while contributing positively to the ongoing vitality of Denbigh’s historic High Street.
